About the Maxfli Tour X

The Maxfli Tour X is the firmest ball in Maxfli’s current Tour lineup. The company says it’s the highest-spinning ball in the lineup as well. While that designation is specifically for irons, we expect it will spin a bit more off the driver than both the Tour and the Tour S.

We’ll sort that out with our upcoming robot ball test.

As is the case with every Maxfli Tour series ball to date, the 2023 Tour X is proprietary to DICK’S Sporting Goods and is produced by Foremost in Taiwan.

Maxfli Tour X Construction

The Maxfli Tour X is a four-piece golf ball. With the 2021 Tour X, Maxfli shifted from dual-core to dual-mantel construction. The design carries through with the 2023 Tour X.

Today, PUMA Golf and Rickie Fowler announce their newest collaboration with Duvin Design. 

The limited-edition capsule, fittingly named “Purveyors of Leisure”, is designed to perform on and off the course. Among other items, the capsule features a first for Duvin Design—a signature shoe.

Behind the Design

PUMA Golf, Rickie Fowler and Duvin Design are no strangers to one another. The trio collaborated on a summery apparel collection just last year. Throughout the collection, you’ll notice nautical themes inspired by Hobie Cat sailboats and sunset-esque pastel hues to boot. 

The “Purveyors of Leisure” collection stems from a long-standing friendship between Fowler and Duvin co-founder Shaun O’Meara. Sound familiar? Shaun, the son of two-time major winner Mark O’Meara, grew up playing golf with Fowler. This on-and-off-course relationship naturally progressed into an organic partnership with PUMA Golf, with whom Fowler has been for over a decade. 

“Getting to work with Rickie and the PUMA team is always super exciting for us,” says Austin Duvall, Creative Director of Duvin. “It’s incredibly rewarding to get the opportunity to take our inspiration from leisure apparel and apply to it PUMA’s world-class manufacturing and expertise in crafting the ultimate performance products for golf.”

Welcome back to Dave’s Big Boot Bonanza, my ongoing series exploring golf shoe options for the wide of foot. Thankfully, there are excellent wide-sized golf shoe options for us. Take the previously reviewed adidas S2G wide spikeless shoes. Those shoes fit my wide-profile feet and have gotten more and more comfortable over months of play.

Today, I’m reviewing another adidas model, the ZG23 BOA spiked golf shoe. I’ve been looking forward to testing these. Truthfully, I was ridiculously excited to get the ZG23s on my feet. I don’t think another golf product generated the same amount of anticipation or elation this year. So pumped up for these kicks.

Wyndham Clark climbed to 13th in the Official World Golf Ranking after a breakthrough U.S. Open win. He was 241st in the world the day after the 2022 U.S. Open.

Wyndham Clark won his first major championship on Sunday, shooting a final-round 70 to finish at 10-under-par for the tournament and hold off four-time major champion Rory McIlroy by one shot. The victory was a surprise for many, as Clark had never finished better than 75th in a major championship and had missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens. But Clark played steady golf all week, and hit some key shots down the stretch to hold off Rory. The difference to me was the 14th hole, where Wyndham hit a 280 yard second shot to 20 feet and Rory hit his 125 yard third shot into a bunker.

LACC started the week off in controversial fashion with two players shooting major championship record tying 62’s along with a host of other low scores, but redeemed herself as a solid US Open venue with some more moderate scoring over the last few days. It was however, the lowest scoring average in US Open history with 71.16. I have never played there, but despite a few negative player reviews, I liked the look and setup of the course for the week. I would have liked to see the short 15th play around 120 yards long on Saturday instead of the very short 80 yard shot they had it set up for.

Rory was so close, yet again! On Sunday he hit more greens than any other player yet turned in his worst putting performance of the week, losing 2.25 strokes to the field. Here are his strokes gained putting stats by round:

1st: +2.74 2nd: +1.89 3rd: -1.19 4th: -2.25

In a disturbing trend he seems to hit the ball well, yet perhaps rather conservatively, on major Sundays and putt poorly. The longest putt he converted in his final 22 holes was a 7 foot putt for par on the 16th on Sunday. It pretty much was St. Andrews all over again!

After nine years, no one is more determined to win another major title than Rory McIlroy. But his belief he can overcome 'fine margins' remains as strong as ever as he prepares to go back to Hoylake for the 2023 Open Championship.
