California Winning – Celebrating our Champions 2021

Celebrating our Champions

This summer we saw some impressive victories across our top women’s competitions. Congratulations to the winners!

NCGA Women’s Amateur – Annika Borelli

Alamo resident Annika Borrelli failed to get through a U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier. The poor results literally left her in tears. Among those consoling her was her dad, Dave, and her coach at the University of San Francisco, Sara Doell. “After talking with my coach, she just told me to remember to have fun out there. Not to press early,” said Borrelli, a senior on the USF women’s golf squad.

Borrelli took the piece of wisdom and ran with it, as she’d go on to post a wire-to-wire win at the annual NCGA Women’s Amateur Championship.

“Coming into this event, my mindset was to have fun. To just enjoy the moment,” Borrelli said.

NCGA Senior Women’s Amateur – Tina Barker

Fairfield resident Tina Barker already had won an NCGA Four-Ball event. But the 62-year-old accomplished veteran had never won an NCGA individual title. Until now.

Barker shot a final-round 10-over 82 but held on, defeating Karen Garcia on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, to win the annual NCGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Poppy Hills.

“I didn’t play that well, but I hung in there,” said Barker, a member at Green Valley Country Club.

(New) NCGA Mid-Amateur – Kelly Wilson

Cameron Park CC member Kelly Wilson took a timeout from her mom duties and ended up securing a historic victory.

Wilson, 47 and the mother of two boys (Drake, age 8 and Chase, age 18 months), made birdie on the par-5 18th hole to come in with a final round 75 to win the inaugural NCGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship by a stroke over Kendra Bishop on Sunday at Poppy Hills. The victory also marked Wilson’s first NCGA title.

“I’m honestly really proud. To win this tournament against this awesome group of women,” said Wilson, who finished the 36-hole event with a score of 7-over 151.
