Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers will face off against Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in a 12-hole golf event on June 1; all four NFL quarterbacks participated in a media preview event Wednesday ahead of The Match.
Golfers love to play this game, but they also love to watch golf on TV to find nuggets of knowledge that they hope will improve their game. The PGA Championship was fun to watch and gave a few great ideas for those sitting on the sidelines.
Every Round has it Ups and Downs
The PGA Championship was a real wake-up for golfers. Don’t get frustrated when you play a great round of golf followed by a poor round of golf. It may be caused by the wind or the phase of the moon, but your luck seems to change day to day. Inconsistency for the pros seems to be the same as we experience as recreational players. If you watched all 4 days of the PGA Championship you can appreciate the UPS and DOWNS experienced by McIlroy, Zalatoris (so close), Bubba Watson (fun while it lasted), Rahm (#1 was out of it), Spieth (hot and cold), Fowler (getting hotter), Pereira (double bogie on the 18th) and Justin Thomas (winning the Playoff from 7 back).
Rory Practicing Shots to Take Off Back-SPIN
When you are making an approach shot to a green with a steep slope off the front, you CAN’T afford to hit shots with a lot of back-spin, especially at Southern Hills where many greens are setup with a drop-off on all sides. On the practice range they highlighted Rory practicing by choking down about 4 inches on clubs and hitting balls back in his stance to eliminate backspin.
Adding to the already stellar lineup, National Golf Links follows its successful hosting of the 2013 Walker Cup with the 2030 Curtis Cup matches. Fantastic news for the women’s game.
For Immediate Release:
LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. (May 25, 2022) – National Golf Links of America, in Southampton, N.Y., has been named the host site of the 46th Curtis Cup Match, to be held June 7-9, 2030. This will be the third USGA championship conducted at National Golf Links, which has previously hosted the 1922 and 2013 Walker Cup Matches.
“We are thrilled to return to National Golf Links, one of America’s finest golf courses and a true cathedral of the game,” said Mark Hill, USGA managing director, Championships. “The club has been such an integral part of Walker Cup history, so for its leadership to offer to host a Curtis Cup speaks volumes about their commitment to the amateur and women’s game. We cannot wait to work with their leadership in the effort to stage another memorable Match.”
National Golf Links of America, which opened in 1909, was designed by renowned golf course architect Charles Blair Macdonald, who guided the course’s development over its first 30 years. Macdonald’s tenure included the inaugural Walker Cup Match in 1922. Led by playing captain William C. Fownes Jr. and with a side that included Bob Jones, Charles “Chick” Evans and Francis Ouimet, the United States won the first Match, 8-4. National Golf Links of America was the home club of George Herbert Walker, USGA president in 1920, when the event was conceived, and the man who donated the trophy. The Walker Cup Match returned to National Golf Links in 2013, when the USA Team defeated GB&I 17-9.
The PGA Tour gets back into the regular swing of things a week after a major with the Charles Schwab Challenge. Here is how to watch on the action on ESPN+.
The new ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M Standard golf shoe is, to put it kindly, a mouthful. It also represents several firsts for the ASICS-Srixon North American partnership.
The first first? It’s ASICS’ first PGA TOUR-validated shoe introduced to the North American market. Yep, these are Hideki’s shoes.
The second first: it’s the first product introduced under the new Dunlop Sports Americas umbrella. Dunlop Sports is the new North American subsidiary of Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
And the third first is that the ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M Standard is the first ASICS golf offering in North America that maybe-kinda-sorta could be considered a “traditional” style golf shoe. It’s no modified wing-tip, but it’s definitely not an athletic-style golf shoe, either.
And, not for nothing, it may very well be the best golf shoe ASICS has released in North America. Given ASICS’ middle-of-the-road performance in our Buyer’s Guides, that may sound like a left-handed compliment. But after two rounds, we can safely say this is a starting lineup-level piece of footwear.
Where can I see golf ball compression numbers in one place?
That’s probably the most common question to come out of our work in the MyGolfSpy Ball Lab.
For golfers looking for that sort of thing, we’ve built a compression chart that includes every ball we’ve measured to date. In the interest of providing even more information, we’ve also included the layer count, number of dimples and cover material.
Below the chart, you’ll find a golf ball compression FAQ of sorts. The goal is to tackle your compression questions while hopefully clearing up what really is an abundance of golf ball compression misinformation found elsewhere.
As always, if you have more questions, drop them into the comment section.
A tremendous piece of work from the CBS team and writer John Hopkins, who also narrated this tribute to photographer David Cannon. It was shown to the audience for Cannon’s award acceptance before an enjoyable Q&A with Jim Nantz. Enjoy!

Ever wondered why you’re three-putting more than usual? Could be a multitude of different factors. A shift in handicap, conidtions and even where in the world you’re playing.
I recently took a trip to Colorado for a close friend’s wedding. We had the bright idea to go golfing. For me, pure excitement. For the other two, a mixed bag of emotions. The groom has played before but still qualifies as a recreational golfer. The other guy, well … It was his first time.
Naturally, my inclination was that putting would be a struggle for both of them. For my beginner friend, that held true. He hit some awesome shots and I was extremely proud of him. However, putting was his ultimate downfall, as it is for most beginners or higher-handicap golfers.
As if golf isn’t already hard, putting is a game of its own. Over the years, Shot Scope has been collecting putter data from its users, all in an effort to help golfers improve.
Let’s take a look at some key putting metrics from Shot Scope’s database.
Hogan had once selected his “All American golf course” for Life Magazine and included the 465-yard 12th hole at Southern Hills, a dogleg left to a green protected by water and sand. [Tommy] Bolt remembered this and couldn’t wait to remind Hogan, a man he respects more than any other—they have a good friendship—that he “whipped up” on this favorite golf hole of Ben’s, and the Southern Hills members. In the four rounds, Bolt birdied the rugged 12th three times on the way to his first major title, most spectacularly in the Saturday-morning round with a soaring 3-iron second that wound up three feet from the flag. Former Southern Cal Trojan Sean Crocker, after posting rounds of 64 at Royal Oaks and 67 at Lakewood Country Club, qualified for his first U.S. Open, which will be held next month.
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson will be sidelined for four to six weeks because of torn meniscus in his knee, he announced on social media on Monday, a day after the PGA Championship concluded in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas took a dig at Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher after winning a second Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.
Two majors down, two to go. So who's in good shape? Who's in bad shape? And who just needs a little tweak?
Justin Thomas has always had the game. After an epic comeback that left little doubt about that, he has a second PGA Championship to show for it.
The majority of American golf clubs are in the red, gore of the stream shovel, blood drawn by mound builders. We have learned nothing from Scotland and England where the ancient and honorable game can be enjoyed on marvelous links at one tenth the admission fees, dues, green fees, etc., that prevail in the land of the free.
