Now that another exhilarating edition of the Masters is in the books, it’s time to take a look back at just how historic Sunday’s final round was.

On a day where the stakes couldn’t have been higher, Rory McIlroy survived through dramatic highs and lows to finally capture his elusive green jacket (size 38 regular for those wondering).

Despite making four double bogeys during the week—including two on Sunday—McIlroy fought through the adversity and made some critical birdies down the stretch, including the one in a playoff that clinched the title.

McIlroy is just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. Other than Tiger Woods, it hadn’t been done since Jack Nicklaus in 1966. That puts McIlroy in elite company on a list of the best golfers to ever play (and I think it’s time he joins the top 10 of the all-time greats, narrowly eclipsing Mickelson).

But while there will plenty of time to assess McIlroy’s growing legacy, I want to know your immediate reaction to this Masters Sunday.

Now that the 2025 Masters is in the books, we can start to go back and break down how it all unfolded.

While some argue that golf isn’t just a distance game, the driving distance stats from Augusta suggest otherwise. Distance off the tee played a big role in how the tournament finished.

Outside of driving distance, there were some other stats that made this an exciting Masters tournament. Here’s some data that helps tell the story.

Bryson DeChambeau didn’t have his A-game on Sunday but he led the field in driving distance (330.8 yards) and still hit 78 percent of his fairways for the tournament.Rory McIlroy ranked second in driving distance, second in putting average and scrambled at 68 percent. He wasn’t perfect tee-to-green but the short game and putter were dialed in.Justin Rose tied Rory to force the playoff and quietly had one of the most complete performances: top three in greens in regulation, top three in putting and led the field in birdie or better percentage (33.3 percent).Corey Conners was a ball-striking machine: 84 percent of fairways hit (T6), 76 percent GIR (T2) and a T8 finish to show for it. But the putter kept him from a win: he ranked 38th in putting average.Jason Day led the field in scrambling, getting up and down 85 percent of the time. He made par or better on 23 of 27 missed greens.Hideki Matsuyama led the field in GIR at over 80 percent and fired a final-round 66, which tied for the best round on Sunday.

Hitting more greens in regulation (GIR) makes scoring easier but knowing that doesn’t tell you how to hit more greens. It also doesn’t tell you how many greens other golfers with your handicap are hitting. The truth is that most amateurs don’t realize just how many greens they’re missing or how many strokes that’s costing them. Let’s break down how many greens you should hit and what it takes to raise that number.

How many greens you should be hitting (based on handicap)

The average PGA Tour player hits about 65 percent of greens in regulation. Quick math tells us that’s roughly 12 greens per round. I bring that up because it’s important to understand that hitting all 18 greens isn’t a realistic goal for amateur players. Most pros don’t even come close.

The real goal is simpler: Hit one or two more than you are now.

Want to hit more greens?

Now that you know how many greens you should be hitting, here are a few strategies to hit more. The strategies to hit more greens in regulation will change relative to your handicap.

For higher handicaps (15+)

Higher handicaps hit between one and four greens per round. The biggest issue these players face are long approach shots to the greens. It’s mostly a distance problem.

The DS-Adapt Max K is the highest-performing COBRA driver in the 2025 test. It ranks fourth overall among all drivers tested. One factor that really helped propel the DS-Adapt Max K to the top is its distance performance. Testers had an average total distance of 250.84 yards.

With that extra distance capability, it can be hard to keep drives accurate. The Max K finished in the lower half of the test for accuracy but it was still a consistent performer with high forgiveness scores.

DO have a “go-to” club (Even if it’s not driver)

If your driver is your best club in your bag, that’s great. However, if it’s one of the worst, don’t feel forced to use it on the first tee. Sometimes, a reliable driving iron, hybrid or 3-wood will do the trick.

Off the first tee, get yourself in the fairway.

DO burn off tension with a couple of over-speed practice swings

From the time you finish on the range to the time you get to the first tee, it could be 10 to 15 minutes. Tension starts to creep up on you and you start thinking about the water hazard down the right side, etc.

Before you hit, stand behind the ball and make a couple of hard practice swings, much harder than you normally would. Use this to release some pent-up energy and get the tension to dissipate from your arms.
