I’m a disgrace to MyGolfSpy. For years, I’ve been what I would call a golf ball skeptic. I can’t be the only golfer who’s wondered if the golf ball really makes a difference.
That line of thinking continued until last summer when I accompanied the MGS team to Phoenix to watch robots hit golf balls for a week straight. It was then, and only then, that I started to really see and understand the difference that a golf ball makes.
When you go out to shag balls at the end of the range and one brand has a tight grouping near the back and another is 15 yards shorter and sprayed every which way, it’s much easier to quantify and qualify the impact that the golf ball has.
Fast-forward to now. Armed with my newfound knowledge that the golf ball does indeed matter, I set out to find which golf ball is right for me. I grabbed my clubs and headed to the local Golf Galaxy for a golf ball fitting.
Here are a few things I learned along the way.
Have you ever had a hole-in-one? If not, the odds of ever getting one are not in your favor.
Trust me, I know.
The closest thing I’ve had to a hole-in-one is the day I had to throw out my favorite pair of socks because ….
Wait for it …
I had a hole in one.
I’m not a “fire the coach” kind of guy. If anything, my fault comes in being too loyal. I still have socks that remember the Yankees winning a World Series.
Having said that, I’ve seen enough from Jay Monahan as PGA Tour commissioner, a position he took in January 2017.
We’re nearly eight years in and Monahan has not inspired confidence, particularly in the past few years as LIV has become a factor. While the Tour has succeeded on some levels—such as jacking up purses and retaining corporate sponsorship at a surprising rate—pro golf has continued to suffer.
Ultimately, leaders have to be responsible for results.
Here are the five main reasons it’s time for Monahan to step aside.

Callaway is a well-known brand in the golf industry, recognized for its innovation and quality. Here's an overview of some of the key Callaway golf clubs:
Callaway’s range of golf clubs includes options for all aspects of the game, from driving off the tee to chipping around the greens, making it a popular choice among golfers of all levels.
Topgolf Callaway has made official what many have been expecting over the last month. The company is officially splitting up.
In an announcement to investors late yesterday, Topgolf Callaway announced it will spin off the Topgolf business and create two separate and independent companies. Topgolf will go one way. Callaway golf equipment and active lifestyle brands will go another.
You can call it an amicable divorce.
You can also call it a reset to January of 2021, before the Topgolf-Callaway merger.
The split is expected to be finalized by the second half of 2025.
For years, golfers have debated whether forged clubs are better than their cast counterparts.
Our data-driven testing at MyGolfSpy has proven there’s little to no performance difference between the two. The ball doesn’t know (or care) whether a club is forged or cast.
But what we haven’t yet explored are the differences between forged and cast clubs at a granular level.
Until now.
What if we could put a forged and cast club under an electron microscope and understand on (literally) a microscopic level WHY a golfer might prefer one to the other?
Finding the right golf ball is hard, which is why we recommend getting fitted for a golf ball. That said, a good ball fitter is hard to find (harder still if you’re looking for a brand-agnostic option), so we didn’t even put Do get fitted on this list (even though I think you should).
What you’ll find here is what I suppose you might call general advice – a short list of Dos and Don’ts to help you avoid making the big mistakes when choosing a golf ball.
If you only take one piece of advice from this post, make it this one.
Avoid refinished (sometimes marketed as ‘refurbished’) golf balls.
Refinished golf balls have only one thing going for them: They’re cheap. The problem with refinished balls is, well, absolutely everything else.
Shopping for new golf gear can feel as daunting as hitting a tee shot after the slow foursome in front lets you play through.
But it doesn’t have to be.
I’ve bought, tested and worn well over 100 golf shoes, and have learned a thing or two about what makes some inherently better than the rest. Unfortunately, there are also few pitfalls that you MUST avoid if you want to end up with something that isn’t a waste of your time and money.
There are loads of things you should avoid. Don’t buy without trying on and definitely don’t buy something online unless there is a liberal return policy.
But the biggest mistake I see golfers make is far less obvious.
There not may be a more important club in your bag to update regularly than your wedges. After 75-125 rounds, you begin to see a notable drop in spin performance around the greens. Those grooves only stay sharp for so long, and depending on your playing and practice schedule, mileage will vary. Today’s deal helps you save some money on a solid upgrade.
