2023 Scotty Cameron Champions Choice Putters

2023 Scotty Cameron Champions Choice Putters

Scotty Cameron announces new Champions Choice limited-edition putters.Putters are CNC milled from 303 stainless steel, featuring a teryllium insert and aluminum sole weight. All models are Plus versions of the classic Cameron Newport and Newport 2 heads. At shops July 28 with a MSRP of $700

At the end of the month, Scotty Cameron is bringing us another Champions Choice limited-edition putter line. When the original Champions Choice line launched back in 2021, I thought it was a one-and-done thing: the teryllium button-back putters surfacing briefly, then vanishing again for another decade.

Honestly, with so many surprise putter happenings this summer, I should have expected something like this. Add new Scotty Cameron teryllium button-back putters to the list of things that dropped my jaw and emptied my Venmo this summer.

Seriously, I’m not sure how putter lovers are going to make it through this summer financially. Is skipping a mortgage payment really that harmful to your credit score? (Asking for a friend.)

The Champions Choice Rundown from the Man Himself

That video sets the vibe for the new 2023 Scotty Cameron Champions Choice putter line but it is a little light on the details. No worries! That’s what I am here for. The only question I don’t have the answer for is, “Why there isn’t there an apostrophe after “Champions.’”

I’m goofing a bit but “Champions” is a well-earned descriptor. Four of the last seven men’s major champions have won using Scotty Cameron putters.

First Look: Proto Concept C01 TBic Iron Review

Several months ago, Proto Concept announced the C03 TC cavity-back iron which replaced the original C03 CB model that it launched a bit over a year ago. As one might expect, the JDM (Japanese domestic market)  upstart is also replacing the first-generation C01 muscle-back iron with the C01 TB. Technically, the moniker is C01 TBic—we’ll handle that “ic” part momentarily.

If you know me, you’re aware that I have a fever for Japanese gear and the only cure is more Endo-forged irons and wedges (though I wouldn’t balk at a forged cow bell, I suppose). That aside, the objective of the C01 TBic is to provide golfers with a true muscle-back iron that can be paired with the C03 TC, though the C01 TBic is offered from 5-iron through pitching wedge for those who wish to play a full set of blade-style irons.

It’s also fair to note that the C01 TBic is the embodiment of a niche product. It caters to highly skilled ball-strikers who aren’t easily dissuaded by an elevated price tag, like $450 per club elevated. That said, the standard pricing disclaimer applies: If expensive goods draw your ire, you’re likely not the target consumer. Moreover, the existence of luxury items does not eliminate the availability of lower-priced alternatives.

Proto Concept Refresher

Plenty of golfers know the name Lydia Ko. Serious followers might recognize Haeji Kang or Ryuji Imada. What they have in common is that they’re part of a growing contingent of professionals playing Proto Concept equipment.

With that, Proto Concept isn’t as recognized as JDM stalwarts Miura, Epon or Yonex. Growing a brand takes time, particularly when you won’t find it in your local big box retail store. So there’s that.

A Beginner’s Guide to Golf

Starting the game of golf is daunting. We’re here to help. We want to give you the basic knowledge you need to start your golf journey off on the right foot.

We’ve spent years testing and researching golf equipment to help people like you enjoy this great game. Here we’ve compiled useful tips and resources into a complete beginner’s guide to golf. From which golf clubs to use, tips on choosing tees, and golf club etiquette, we’ve got everything you need to get started on the right course.

The Beginner’s Guide to Golf

How do I know which golf clubs to buy?

Professional golfers, like a professional driver, rely on precision instruments to get the job done. Start with something that’s more like a Nissan Versa, rather than making the jump directly to a Ferrari. Super game-improvement clubs are the key.. They’re designed to help you improve, after all!

Look for golf clubs labeled as “super game-improvement.”Shafts are confusing. Stick with something in a regular flex. It’s OK to buy used. Used golf clubs are a great way to start your golf journey on a budget.Unsure of where to start? Our head-to-head tool can be used to compare golf equipment that we’ve rigorously tested.

What golf ball should I be playing?

Not all golf balls are created equal. The thing you need to remember (and come to grips with) is that you’re going to lose a lot of golf balls.

Our testing has shown that golf balls made of urethane rather than ionomer tend to perform betterUse the same ball each time you play. This will help you become more consistent. Stay away from refurbished or refinished golf balls. Often these balls can be wolves in sheep’s clothing … they aren’t always what they appear to be. You can always find a decent deal on high quality golf balls, if you’re willing to look for it.

What kind of golf bag do I need?

You’re going to need a golf bag to carry all of your new gear. There are really two types of golf bags you need to be aware of, cart golf bags and stand golf bags.

Wednesday At The Open

One more good quality of the holes at Hoylake deserves a word of mention; it has been called by Mr. Low their “indestructibleness.” By this most useful, if inelegant word, he means that they are good whether played with or against the wind, and that is very high praise, particularly as there are few courses on which a change of wind more completely alters the character of each individual hole. Blessed indeed is the hole which can keep its good character whichever way the wind is blowing. BERNARD DARWIN

Scottie Scheffler Does IT, Can YOU?

Can you learn from Scottie Scheffler’s swing? He recently returned to World Number 1 with 6 wins since February 2022. He achieved this feat in spite of his wild footwork during his swing. Most swing lessons tells us to finish in balance. Scottie does this but his feet are flying throughout his swing. Should you attempt to duplicate his fancy footwork?

Scottie adds a lot of motion to his footwork during his downswing in orderto add more power. Others, like Rory McIlroy, achieve the same distance with a balanced finish using a more conventional golf swing.

I found this interesting review of Scottie’s swing in a recent blog:

[The defining trait of Scottie Scheffler’s golf swing is his footwork. During his downswing, his trail (right) foot slides towards his left. Greg Norman did something similar, and Scottie himself says it’s become a way that helps him feel athletic through the shot. His feet slide in the same direction as the club when it swings through, which helps transfer his weight and prevent a left miss.

It’s a move that may have been coached out of a player in a bygone era. But Scottie and his longtime coach, Golf Digest Top 50 coach Randy Smith, built around it. And therein lies the lesson, said fellow PGA Tour player Michael S. Kim on Twitter: “Find your best swing, don’t copy others.”
