LIV Versus PGA Tour At The U.S. Open: Who Showed Up At Oakmont?

LIV Versus PGA Tour At The U.S. Open: Who Showed Up At Oakmont?

We’re three majors deep into the 2025 season and “LIV versus PGA Tour” is still one of the most fun storylines in professional golf.

At Augusta, it was all about Rory McIlroy who captured his first Masters and completed the career Grand Slam. At Quail Hollow, Scottie Scheffler dominated again, claiming his third major. At Oakmont, J.J. Spaun stole the spotlight with a dramatic U.S. Open victory.

So how did the two sides fare at the 2025 U.S. Open?

LIV vs. PGA: U.S. Open by the numbers

What stood out

LIV had a smaller group of players participating in the U.S. Open, yet they still had about the same made-cut percentage as the PGA Tour golfers. J.J. Spaun took home the win so we are now three majors in with no sign of an LIV champion in a major event for 2025.

Three LIV golfers cracked the top 10

Finding three LIV golfers in the top 10 is impressive.

Tyrrell Hatton (T4, +3) Carlos Ortiz (T4, +3) Jon Rahm (T7, +4)

That matches their top 10 count from the PGA Championship. While nobody has pulled off a win just yet, these guys are hanging around.

LIV’s big names missed (again)

Some of the big-name players who were expected to make a run at the U.S. Open (Bryson DeChambeau) didn’t even make the cut. The rough got to Bryson and there’s plenty of video evidence of that.

Bryson DeChambeau (+10, CUT) Dustin Johnson (+10, CUT) Cameron Smith (+8, CUT) Phil Mickelson (+8, CUT) Joaquin Niemann (+10, CUT) Richard Bland (+18, CUT)

Spaun gets it done for the Tour

While LIV had a presence, the trophy stayed with the Tour. Spaun held off the field with a gritty final-round 72 to finish 1-under and claim his first major. This year’s U.S. Open was a battle where Spaun outlasted the LIV and his fellow Tour guys.

Final thoughts

This was LIV’s best showing yet in a 2025 major. However, the trophy and most of the leaderboard still belonged to the PGA Tour.

The scorecard so far:

Masters: Tour win PGA Championship: Tour win U.S. Open: Tour win.

The season’s final shot comes at Royal Troon in Scotland from July 17 to 20. If LIV wants to flip the narrative, that’s the last chance they’ll have in 2025.
