TaylorMade is giving everyday golfers a rare opportunity to experience Rory McIlroy’s irons with the limited release of RORS•PROTO irons.
The hook for this limited run of irons is that they’re the exact specifications of the set McIlroy has used to capture 18 PGA Tour wins since joining Team TaylorMade in 2017. While I’m sure that exact spec thing is part of the appeal, it’s worth mentioning that, as with any other TaylorMade iron offering, you can have the RORS Protos built to your spec – any shaft, any grip, and of course, lie and loft adjustments as needed.
Anyway …
What makes these irons truly special is the attention to detail. The 7 and 8 irons feature thinner top lines matching Rory’s visual preferences, and each iron includes “FORGED” on the hosel (because it’s pretty much the law with golf gear) with four colored dots representing each of McIlroy’s Major Championship victories. The irons also utilize the same TW2 grooves found in Tiger Woods’ P•7TW irons rather than the MX9 grooves typically found in the P•730.
This release follows closely on the heels of TaylorMade’s limited edition RORS TP5 golf balls, suggesting a potential shift in the company’s approach to limited-edition products. Rather than strictly limiting quantities, the company appears to be experimenting with limited purchase windows instead. This strategy creates the same sense of exclusivity while potentially allowing more fans to access these unique products, price point notwithstanding.
