The Most Surprising Names To Miss The 2025 Open Championship Cut

Earlier this week, we shared the odds for The Open and highlighted the players most likely to contend.

As always, the field was trimmed after Friday’s round.

The cut line came in at +1, right in line with typical Open conditions. Here’s a look at the big names who won’t be teeing it up this weekend at Royal Portrush.

Brooks Koepka (75-74)

Koepka couldn’t get anything going this week. With a trio of bogeys in his final three holes Thursday, the four-time major champion slid further outside the cut line. On Friday, he couldn’t get it going to recover.

Collin Morikawa (75-74)

One of the cleanest ball-strikers in the field looked out of sync all week. He had a 38 on the front nine on Friday and just couldn’t get anything going on the back.

Cameron Smith (72-78)

Smith opened with a solid 72, but the wheels came off on Friday. A 41 on the front nine left the 2022 Open champ well outside the number. When he made the turn, he bogeyed 10 and 11.

Adam Scott (72-79)

Scott had no answer for the gusts and tight lines of Royal Portrush on Friday. A second-round 79 included three doubles.

Patrick Cantlay (73-72)

Cantlay looked in control for most of Friday, but bogeys on 11 and 15 made it tough to make the cut. He gets credit for a birdie on 18 to finish strong but it wasn’t enough to play weekend golf.

Tom Kim (69-76)

After firing a 69 in Round 1, Kim looked like he might be on track for a weekend run. But a +5 round of 76 Friday, including a double on 18 and bogeys at 11 and 14, ended that story.

Jason Day (73-71)

Day was one shot off the cut line after two rounds. A birdie at 17 gave him a chance, but the +1 on his front nine proved to be too much to recover from.

Joaquin Niemann (70-74)

Niemann fell victim to a rough front nine Friday and couldn’t recover. He made birdies on 10 and 12 but then followed them up with bogeys on 13, 15 and 18. His +2 finish was just one shot shy of the cut.

Ben Griffin (74-70)

Griffin made four birdies on Friday and nearly pulled off a rally. But his opening 74 left no margin for error. He also snuck in a double bogey six on the fourth hole and missed the cut by one.

Other notable cuts

Cameron Young – 74-72 Min Woo Lee – 74-73 J.T. Poston – 72-77 Nick Taylor – 77-68 Louis Oosthuizen – 77-71 Tom Hoge – 81-73 Padraig Harrington – 75-76
