New golf clubs hit the market every year promising more distance, better forgiveness and tighter dispersion. But, sometimes, even the best players in the world choose to stick with what already works.
Case in point: Justin Thomas just won on the PGA Tour with a $75 fairway wood from 2015 in his bag. Interestingly, it’s not the only “older” club he’s relying on.
Titleist 915 Fd 5-Wood
Originally launched in late 2014, the 915 Fd was known for its low spin, penetrating ball flight and a compact, player-friendly head that better players loved.
Today, you can often find a Titleist 915 Fd used for around $75 or less
Titleist TS3 3-Wood
The TS3 was released in 2018 and was known for offering players a boost in ball speed and forgiveness compared to previous Titleist models. The TS3 is considered the “better player” option compared to the TS2 offering. It has lower spin and a more compact profile.
A used TS3 is typically around $150.
Older fairway woods are staying in Tour bags
Thomas isn’t the only one hanging onto older fairway woods. Several golf professionals are staying with older models while updating irons, drivers and wedges more frequently. Here are a few other examples we have seen in 2025.
Patrick Cantlay plays a Titleist 915F 3-wood (also from 2014) and a TS2 7-wood. Justin Rose still uses TaylorMade M6 woods from 2019. Robert MacIntyre has a TaylorMade AeroBurner 3-wood from 2015. Hideki Matsuyama has a 2021 COBRA King RadSpeed Tour 5-wood in the bag. Jason Day still rotates a TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider putter from 2016 alongside his Stealth 7-wood.There’s a common thread: Once players find a club they trust, they’re reluctant to swap it out
Final thoughts
Maybe it’s not quite time to swap out your fairway woods? How old are the ones you are playing?
If a Tour pro like Justin Thomas can win with a 10-year-old fairway wood, there’s no reason the rest of us need to feel pressured into buying the newest release. Go for a fitting and see if there’s a genuine reason to upgrade. For some clubs, it may not be worth it.
