We Tried It: The Sun Mountain Boom Golf Bag
There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

Sun Mountain Boom: A Design 40 Years in the Making
In 1980, I witnessed the pinnacle of golf bag design. Al Czervik’s staff bag featured everything anyone could want: remote-control club selection, beer on tap, a TV and a danceable sound system. I wasn’t yet playing golf but I was definitely more enamored of Czervik’s style of play than that of Judge Smails.

Solution for Chipping Frustration!
I recently watched a blog by Danny Maude where he presents a new way to improve short chips (without using a conventional chipping swing). How often do you hit a green and then roll about 2 to 10 feet off the green? Then you hit the chip fat or thin. Something takes over your body so that you just can’t make a basic chip. The problem is all in the use of a combination of your legs, arms and wrists. If you have this problem, stay tuned for your hallelujah moment.
This tip is ideal to help with SHORT chips that run out up to about 20 feet. YOU DON’T NEED TO USE A CONVENTIONAL GOLF SWING TO MAKE THESE CHIPS. The LOWER you grip down on your club the easier it is to control the swing. When you grip lower down your club (even below the grip on your club so that your club is almost vertical to the ground), you have better control of the swing direction. You only lose power. Short chips DON’T NEED POWER. You want short chips with CLEAN HITS and PERFECT DIRECTIONAL CONTROL.
There are 3 types of short chips covered in this blog: Chip & Run, Chip & Check-up and Chipping in Heavy Grass. Higher lofted clubs will give you a higher chip so you can chose from any iron loft up to a 60 degree wedge. Experiment with all lofted clubs to find your comfort level but remember to make adjustments to higher lofted clubs for shorter chips with shorter run-outs.
Setup: Narrow stance, feet parallel and angled 25 to 45 degrees forward, move your hands down to the bottom of the grip or even below your grip and down the shaft to hold your club almost in a vertical position. You will be hitting off the toe of your club as it points toward the ground. Your shoulders should be horizontal to the ground and you need to keep your eye on the ball until after impact.
1/ Chip & Run-out: Use this method to clear the fringe or narrow rough and run out to a distant pin location. Don’t setup with a shaft lean. Ball position is lined up between your toes. Rock your shoulders to swing your straight arms and use gravity to swing the weight of your club. Use a minor wrist release after impact as you swing up your target line.

Motocaddy Comes to America: The Power Trolley Invasion
Key Takeaways
Motocaddy is taking the U.S. market seriously, setting up operations and warehousing in Carlsbad, Calif. The company is hiring a nationwide network of sales reps, focusing on green-grass accounts.Motocaddy has opened a full-time service center in Chicago. The focus this year is on establishing rental fleets and sales through pro shops. As Motocaddy comes to America, the UK’s top seller of electric carts — “trolleys” as they call them over there — has a question for you.
On a typical five-mile hike, would you rather:
A: Carry a 25-pound pack for all five miles
B: Push that 25-pound pack for all five miles
C: Just, you know, walk for all five miles
Take golf out of the equation and nearly all reasonably non-maniacal types would pick C. The thing is, though, that nine out of 10 golfers in the U.S. would actually pick D: Sit your ass in a cart and drive the five miles. While many of you may think that represents a huge obstacle to Motocaddy’s efforts to penetrate the U.S. market, Motocaddy sees it as an opportunity.
Lots of overseas companies have seen opportunities in the U.S. but there’s a big difference between seeing the opportunity and actually seizing it. You need a strategy.

PGA Tour golf best bets: WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession
The PGA Tour heads to Florida where a loaded field competes in the first WGC tournament of the year. Here are our best bets for the event.
2021 Yamaha Inpres UD+2 Driver
2021 Yamaha Inpres UD+2 Driver is here! For the long time fanatics of the Yamaha golf club brand, you know that the “Inpres” name has been synonymous to Yamahas main line of golf clubs including the legendary “Inpres Tour” series. These were highly sought after and limited production models that generated and nurtured many Yamaha Golf fanatics among JDM users. Fast forward to 2021, Yamaha’s athlete player’s line of clubs has now been transitioned off to their RMX line of clubs and the Inpres line now is dedicated to the distance oriented Game Improvement clubs with the UD+2 series. The 2021 UD+2 marks the 3rd generation of the highly popular and successful series geared towards experienced golfers looking to regain some of their lost distance, as well as players who just picked up the game of golf recently looking for ultimate forgiveness and playability. It is evident through the years of success and iterative refinement, the UD+2 series provide golfers with a great combination of distance, forgiveness and playability in an attractive overall design.
The 2021 Inpres UD+2 driver designs around a theme of being able to hit your “best shot of the day” on every shot in your round! What an exciting concept! There are drivers out there that provides you ultimate distance once every 14 drives… which is great… but in reality you want to see those great shots more often and more consistently. It seems obvious when you state it that way, but many times as players, we become overly joyful about the one super distance drives in a round that you feel that nothing else matters. As you gain experience in this game of golf, we learn to understand that repeatable and consistent results are far more important in this game. But what if a club can help you achieve both?
The 2021 Yamaha Inpres UD+2 driver features a new patented technology called “Speedbox” which are small square grill like structure across the leading edge of the crown as well as the leading edge of the sole. The Speedbox structure creates a much rigid structure around the face, which in turn minimizes the energy loss by avoiding the impact energy to disperse as vibration to the rest of the body. Impact energy is maintained and transitioned efficiently into maximum ball speed. Yamaha claims an increase of +1.6 m/s (approx. 3.6 mph) of ball speed compared to their previous model. This 460cc head also features a larger CG angle that makes it easier to square the face at impact. MOI has also been increased from 4650 to 5020 which largely helps with producing straighter shots. Following the tradition of Yamaha drivers of the past, Yamaha Golf again collaborated with their in house Yamaha Acoustic R&D team to perfect the impact sound to have a clean metallic sound pleasing to the ears.
The 2021 Inpres UD+2 driver is certainly worthy of the “Ultimate Distance” (UD) name designation. The driver comes in a 9.5 deg and a 10.5 deg loft with a very light Fujikura Air Speeder shaft in R thru S flexes. If Ultimate Distance is your objective with your drives, the 2021 Yamaha UD+2 driver should definitely be on your short list to consider.

Vokey SM8 Slate Blue Wedges
Vokey SM8 Slate Blue Wedges will be available March 19.The new finish option will be available in all loft, bounce and grind combinations.Retail price is $199.
Vokey SM8 Slate Blue Wedges are coming to retail next month. They offer the same tech as the current SM8 wedge with a new finish option.
That’s basically the whole story and, if it sounds familiar, that’s because … swap an 8 for a 7 … I wrote this story two years ago.
It was a cool refresh then and it’s just as cool now because Slate Blue is Vokey’s best finish. That’s entirely an opinion and I should be clear that there’s no actual science behind it. The Vokey guys would tell you that performance from Slate Blue wedges is the same as any other finish in the Vokey catalog.
Vokey says the application of its Slate Blue finish is similar to PVD but that it’s more time-intensive. As you’d expect, there’s a trade-off for that. Slate Blue wedges cost more but the finish is more durable than PVD so they’ll look better longer.

Baldo Corsa Forged Iron Black Knight Type MC
Introducing the Baldo Corsa Forged Black Knight Type MC Iron. The new Baldo Corsa series has 2 models: MC (muscle cavity) and DC (deep cavity) and Today we are talking about their new MC design.
This is a single-piece forged player’s cavity back with a lot of advanced features. The new Corsa MC has big perimeter weighting surrounding the cavity while the inner area has a good-sized back face shield which adds a bit more stability to performance.
The offset is very minimal and measured in face progression. The PW is at 4.5 FP, keep in mind 5.5FP is pretty much zero offset. The face is both CNCB milled while the added laser milling on the face helps with moisture on the face or ball.
Another interesting feature is the (FIXED) Tungsten screw on the sole to help with swing weight balance and the overall weight of the iron head. The base set is sold 5-PW with an optional #4 and gap wedge.
