With the Travelers Championship and LIV Golf Nashville coming up soon, we take a look at everything from Jon Rahm's injury recovery to Bryson DeChambeau's Olympic snub.
If you like to think that innovation in golf equipment is dead and all this technology OEMs tout is just marketing BS, the player’s distance iron category would like a word.
Player’s distance irons have only really been a thing since 2018. It used to be that if you wanted distance and forgiveness in an iron, you had the game-improvement category. If you wanted precision and workability, you had the player’s iron category of forged blades and cavity-backs.
That left a rather sizable gap in between and if there’s one thing that nature (not to mention industry) hates, it’s a gap.
The evolution of player’s distance irons doesn’t follow the strict tenets of Darwinism but it is a fascinating study. Seven years ago, it simply didn’t exist outside of a few misfit clubs erroneously categorized as game improvement. But thanks to advances in design technology and manufacturing capabilities, the player’s distance iron is arguably the most tech-driven equipment category in the game.
And one of the leaders in that category might surprise you.
This past Sunday at the U.S. Open was an instant classic.
All the ingredients were there for a memorable finish. Two star players, competing on a historic layout, went down to the wire with a major championship on the line.
Adding in the context of Bryson DeChambeau’s renaissance, Rory McIlroy’s major drought and the ongoing schism in professional golf, the entertainment value surpassed most majors in recent memory.
That got us thinking about how this past major Sunday compares to others.
This is highly subjective but I used the following criteria to identify the top 10 major finishes since 2000:

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Wednesday that the difficulty in finalizing a deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf isn't a reason for concern.
The 2024 U.S. Open winner told the Kansas City Chiefs duo they could break 50, prompting Mahomes to respond: "Let's do it!"
Just when we thought that Scottie Scheffler had the magic solution for excellence in golf, his world came crashing down. On the second day of the US Open he just made the cut and we were shocked. We found out that he’s human after all. There really is hope for every struggling golfer. We should all learn from some of the comments and performance at the US Open.
Most golfers will never play #2 Pinehurst as it really is designed to humble any golfer who takes on the challenge. Watching how the pros handle their commitment to their game is the most important thing that we can all take away from this amazing golf event.
Scottie’s Weak Putting Performance:
Even before the start of the US Open, Scottie Scheffler was outside of the top 70 professional golfers for strokes gained in putting. In spite of his seemingly weaker putting performance, he still has an amazing winning record. OUR TAKEAWAY: His performance in other skills like fairways hit, scrambling, greens in regulation, sand saves and one putt greens are enough to keep him at the top of his sport. DON’T LET ONE WEAKNESS DESTROY YOUR MENTAL OUTLOOK.
Positive Attitude:
Roger Federer was a top tennis player who won 80% of the games that he played but he only won 54% of the points. OUR TAKEWAY: The top performer wins by the slimmest of margins. Attitude and Confidence can put you over the top in every sport.
Stay Focused:
Jack Nicklaus commented at his Memorial Tournament that Rory’s inability to win majors over the past 10 years: “He seems to not be able to focus all the way around.” When commenting on Scottie’s success: “He doesn’t make dumb mistakes.” OUR TAKEAWAY: Jack was right about Rory’s focus (when he missed 2 short putts) to lose the US Open and for Scottie: you are only as good a your next shot so keep your head in the game.

Building on yesterday’s theme of you couldn’t get it, but now you can, TaylorMade has released MG4 RAW TW Grind wedges on TaylorMadeGolf.com.
In a nod to keeping it simple, the name tells you most of what you need to know.
It’s a TaylorMade MG4 wedge with a raw finish and a TW sole grind.
What differentiates the “Tour Exclusive” version of the wedge is that, unlike the retail model, these are built to Tiger’s exact specs. That includes a fully raw design (retail versions have raw faces with a chrome finish).
(Why golfers are often asked to pay more for an unfinished wedge is a discussion for another day. Guys, you literally saved the time and expense of the finishing step.)
Tried. Tested. True.
That’s our mission. To give you, the golfer, the truth about the golf gear you’re spending your money on and companies you’re giving money to.
Why? Your game is our job. It’s that simple. You want to play better golf and we want you do just that.
Your game is the first thing we think about when we’re testing a new product. It’s the only thing that really matters to us.
In the hopes of making your game better, we’ve created, refined and executed our Most Wanted Testing for 16 years. This data-driven methodology of testing is what we do best.
Of all the golf destinations in the world, few locales find themselves at number one on more bucket lists than Scotland. The birthplace of modern golf, the game has been played in Scotland for over five centuries. Even in its early days, golf was played so obsessively by Scotsmen that King James II banned golf because his citizens were so busy working on their game that they were neglecting their mandatory military training. Maybe we haven’t come that far from our ancestors at all — we’re still just as obsessed with fine-tuning our skills.
Luckily, the ban was overturned and, from there, things really took off. The first official rules of golf were created by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers for a tournament at their local course, Leith Links in Edinburgh. Those so-called “Thirteen Articles” were soon adopted by clubs throughout the country. (We can even thank a Leith native for bringing golf to America some time later.) Over a hundred years after this first drafting of golf rules, St Andrews, what we now know as the Home of Golf, came up with its own standardized set of rules and thus the modern age of golf had begun.
Today, the spirit of golf lives on in Scotland, with hundreds of courses covering the country’s beautiful landscapes, making it an easy choice for those looking to hop across the pond for the golf trip of their dreams.
But how much does it really cost to get there in 2024?
We caught up with the founder of Halcyon Golf Travel, Jack Sallis, to find out what it takes to plan, execute and, most importantly, pay for the perfect Scottish golf trip. Jack whipped up three similar itineraries for us, each of which explores the vibrant golf scene of the Scottish Highlands and Aberdeenshire, with price points ranging from US $4,000 to $8,000.
There’s no denying launch monitors, pressure plates, even AI-powered club design, are here to stay. The modern golf lesson tee employs high-tech tools to make you a better golfer and technology has become the means to bring the lesson tee to you.
Let’s explore the differences between online and in-person lessons and maybe help you get a little bit better at this game in the process.
I’m a 7-handicap with aspirations of getting to scratch and beyond. Dedication I have but time is another matter. There’s that pesky full-time job, for one. Add in a family with three extremely active little ones and time to play or practice is minimal. I spend most of my weekends at my kid’s baseball tournaments rather than the course and I wouldn’t trade that for the world. But that means that when I do get a chance to practice or play, I have to get the most out of the reps. My time-crunch situation is not unique. The challenge is finding a way to maximize precious practice time to reach my golfing goal.
The thing is, I’ve had to move a lot in my professional life—nine times in the last 20 years in fact, which includes my entire golfing life. That trope you often hear about building an enduring relationship with a swing instructor that makes you feel all warm, fuzzy and confident? Moving so much means that doesn’t work for me and, when I do move, I don’t get to pick the zip code I’m touching down in. As a result, it’s been years of luck of the draw on what teaching pros might be within the ol’ “reasonable drive” radius. The availability of a quality golf instructor isn’t always a certainty.
Of all the benefits of online golf lessons, the real magic is that you can work with whomever you want, geography be damned. Golf coaches have caught on to the online trend in a big way. Case in point: Want to work with Sean Foley, swing coach for Justin Rose and Ben An (to name a couple)? He’s available for online instruction via Skillest. Perhaps you’d like to turn to Cameron McCormick, Jordan Spieth’s instructor, to fix your slice. Yup, he’s on Skillest, too.
