Golfers love to play this game, but they also love to watch golf on TV to find nuggets of knowledge that they hope will improve their game.  The PGA Championship was fun to watch and gave a few great ideas for those sitting on the sidelines.

Every Round has it Ups and Downs

The PGA Championship was a real wake-up for golfers.  Don’t get frustrated when you play a great round of golf followed by a poor round of golf.  It may be caused by the wind or the phase of the moon, but your luck seems to change day to day.  Inconsistency for the pros seems to be the same as we experience as recreational players.  If you watched all 4 days of the PGA Championship you can appreciate the UPS and DOWNS experienced by McIlroy, Zalatoris (so close), Bubba Watson (fun while it lasted), Rahm (#1 was out of it), Spieth (hot and cold), Fowler (getting hotter), Pereira (double bogie on the 18th) and Justin Thomas (winning the Playoff from 7 back).

Rory Practicing Shots to Take Off Back-SPIN

When you are making an approach shot to a green with a steep slope off the front, you CAN’T afford to hit shots with a lot of back-spin, especially at Southern Hills where many greens are setup with a drop-off on all sides.  On the practice range they highlighted Rory practicing by choking down about 4 inches on clubs and hitting balls back in his stance to eliminate backspin.

The new ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M Standard golf shoe is, to put it kindly, a mouthful. It also represents several firsts for the ASICS-Srixon North American partnership.

The first first? It’s ASICS’ first PGA TOUR-validated shoe introduced to the North American market. Yep, these are Hideki’s shoes.

The second first: it’s the first product introduced under the new Dunlop Sports Americas umbrella. Dunlop Sports is the new North American subsidiary of Sumitomo Rubber Industries.

And the third first is that the ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M Standard is the first ASICS golf offering in North America that maybe-kinda-sorta could be considered a “traditional” style golf shoe. It’s no modified wing-tip, but it’s definitely not an athletic-style golf shoe, either.

And, not for nothing, it may very well be the best golf shoe ASICS has released in North America. Given ASICS’ middle-of-the-road performance in our Buyer’s Guides, that may sound like a left-handed compliment. But after two rounds, we can safely say this is a starting lineup-level piece of footwear.

Putting – A Game of Its Own

Ever wondered why you’re three-putting more than usual? Could be a multitude of different factors. A shift in handicap, conidtions and even where in the world you’re playing.

I recently took a trip to Colorado for a close friend’s wedding. We had the bright idea to go golfing. For me, pure excitement. For the other two, a mixed bag of emotions. The groom has played before but still qualifies as a recreational golfer. The other guy, well … It was his first time.

Naturally, my inclination was that putting would be a struggle for both of them. For my beginner friend, that held true. He hit some awesome shots and I was extremely proud of him. However, putting was his ultimate downfall, as it is for most beginners or higher-handicap golfers.

As if golf isn’t already hard, putting is a game of its own. Over the years, Shot Scope has been collecting putter data from its users, all in an effort to help golfers improve.
