Battling a Boredom Problem, PGA Tour Heads into Wounded Players Championship

No tournament in professional golf has been more negatively impacted by the PGA Tour/LIV split than The Players Championship.

The Players has been considered one of the deepest, if not the deepest, fields in the game. Unlike with the majors, The Players doesn’t have a mix of amateurs, club professionals or sectional qualifying. Getting into the tournament is based purely on long-term merit—The Players regularly has hosted the entire roster of top 100 players in the world with an exception or two for injured golfers.

The tag of “fifth major” has been discussed over the years, although The Players always seemed to fit better in a singular category unto to itself: a tier below the majors but elevated above everything else.

It feels different now.

This week’s edition will be missing three of the top 14 players in the world, according to Data Golf. The depth of talent is challenged as well as eight of the top 43 in the world won’t be at TPC Sawgrass—and that does not include 2022 Players champion Cameron Smith, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Mito Pereira, Abraham Ancer and others who otherwise would be in the field.

Amazon Finds: Club Scrub

Clean equipment is critical to consistent performance. Maintaining clean golf clubs and golf balls can be a challenge with brushes, towels or even our previously reviewed golf erasers. Is there a better way? Club Scrub thinks so and feels their product is the one and only thing you need to maintain clean golf equipment on the course. Should it be on your wish list?

The Problem:

As alluded to above, maintaining clean and dry equipment is crucial to getting the most consistent performance out of your gear. Dirty and/or wet golf balls or clubs result in significant performance loss and add to what can sometimes be an already frustrating sport. Using towels and brushes is the traditional method but still leaves a little to be desired as they also get dirty along with being a multi-stage process. The Golf Erasers we tried are another method although I found them next to useless. Is there a better product or method?

The Solution:

Club Scrub claims to have broken the code to clean golf equipment. This little pouch fills with water, is waterproof and includes a soft neoprene covering for wiping off the water after the golf ball or club is cleaned. With a built-in clip to attach to a bag or cart, the functionality certainly seems to be there.

How I Found It:

It has been a particularly wet and muddy start to my golfing season. My clubs have picked up a lot more debris than usual and it’s been a struggle to keep golf balls clean. I searched for a solution that was better than my traditional towel and brush method. A MGS Forum member, knotthead12, made an unofficial review on his Club Scrub and had an overall good experience with it. So I thought it was worth a shot and headed to Amazon. Club Scrub has 500-plus reviews with a 4.8-star rating out of 5. My expectations were high.

jQuery( document ).ready( function( $ ) { var slides = $( '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38 .mgs-gallery-images .mgs-gallery-image' ).length; if ( slides 6 ) { slides = 6; } $( '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38 .mgs-gallery-images' ).slick( { slidesToShow: 1, slidesToScroll: 1, fade: true, prevArrow: '', nextArrow: '', asNavFor: '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38 .mgs-gallery-thumbs', swipe: false, mobileFirst: true, } ); $( '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38 .mgs-gallery-thumbs' ).slick( { slidesToShow: ( slides - 1 ), //less than number of slides, so it always shows infinite scroll (bugfix) slidesToScroll: 1, arrows: false, asNavFor: '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38 .mgs-gallery-images', centerMode: true, focusOnSelect: true, infinite: true, mobileFirst: true, responsive: [ { breakpoint: 1023, settings: { slidesToShow: 3, }, }, { breakpoint: 600, settings: { slidesToShow: 1, }, }, ], } ); $( '#mgs_gallery_65ef73f7e4a38' ).magnificPopup( { delegate: '.mgs-gallery-trigger', type: 'image', gallery: { enabled: true, arrowMarkup: '', }, } ); } );

How It Worked:

Even though all the reviews were positive, I was a bit skeptical. I still felt that it was more gimmick than something I would actually use. Let’s start with how it works and the good aspects I found while using the Club Scrub cleaner.

6 Strategies to Increase Distance With Your Irons

Hitting it 280 off the tee is great but what if your 7-iron only goes 130 yards? There’s a disconnect somewhere. Want to reconnect with your irons? I’ll walk you through six strategies to increase distance with your irons. You’ll be able to implement these strategies immediately and you don’t need to use all six at once.

Play With The Right Golf Ball

As with all things golf, we at MyGolfSpy have done a lot of golf ball testing. Amateur golfers see what the professionals use and assume that’s the best fit for their game. This is not always the case. Amateurs have swing speeds and spin levels that are much different from the professionals.

The biggest mistake you can make when choosing a golf ball is not checking the specific iron distances it can produce.

When we did our 2023 golf ball testing, the Titleist Pro V1x, Callaway Chrome Soft X LS and the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash were the longest golf balls for mid-swing speed—for the driver.

When we tested with irons, the LA Golf Ball, Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash and Titleist AVX were the longest.
