Driving Tips - Generate Power Efficiently

Generating power efficiently in your golf swing—especially with the driver—is all about using your body’s mechanics properly, not just swinging harder. Here's how to do it without losing control or balance:

1. Use Ground Force (Legs & Hips)

  • Start From the Ground Up: Power begins in your feet and legs, not your arms.

  • Shift Weight to Trail Side: Load onto your back foot during the backswing (around 60%–70% of your weight).

  • Explode Through the Hips: Begin the downswing by shifting weight to your lead foot and rotating your hips before your arms move.

Tip: Think of pushing off the ground like a vertical jump—this is where power originates.

TaylorMade Launches Limited Edition RORS•PROTO Irons

TaylorMade is giving everyday golfers a rare opportunity to experience Rory McIlroy’s irons with the limited release of RORS•PROTO irons.

The hook for this limited run of irons is that they’re the exact specifications of the set McIlroy has used to capture 18 PGA Tour wins since joining Team TaylorMade in 2017. While I’m sure that exact spec thing is part of the appeal, it’s worth mentioning that, as with any other TaylorMade iron offering, you can have the RORS Protos built to your spec – any shaft, any grip, and of course, lie and loft adjustments as needed.

Side note: It’s pretty wild that Rory has played the RORS•PROTO exclusively for the better part of the last 8 years. I kinda feel like we’re past the prototype phase.

Anyway …

What makes these irons truly special is the attention to detail. The 7 and 8 irons feature thinner top lines matching Rory’s visual preferences, and each iron includes “FORGED” on the hosel (because it’s pretty much the law with golf gear) with four colored dots representing each of McIlroy’s Major Championship victories. The irons also utilize the same TW2 grooves found in Tiger Woods’ P•7TW irons rather than the MX9 grooves typically found in the P•730.

How Golf Ball Construction Influences Spin

Golf balls may seem simple from the outside but their internal construction significantly impacts performance. Let’s explore how golf ball design affects both backspin and sidespin in a way that’s easy to understand, even if you’re new to the technical side of golf equipment.

The three key elements: Flight, spin, feel

Golf ball performance can be broken down into three main categories:

Flight is primarily determined by the dimple pattern. All things being equal, shallow dimples generally produce higher flight while deeper dimples (like those on the Titleist AVX) create lower trajectories. When comparing balls with identical dimple patterns, the higher-spinning ball will typically fly slightly higher.

Feel largely comes from compression. Higher compression balls feel firmer, lower compression balls feel softer. Cover material also plays a significant role. Take two balls with similar compression like the Titleist AVX and Titleist Velocity – the urethane-covered AVX will feel noticeably softer than the ionomer-covered Velocity.

Spin is where things get interesting and it’s the focus of our discussion.

PXG Myths: Separating Fact From Fiction

Golf brands are like the players themselves: they evolve over time, developing new strengths while addressing weaknesses. Yet, in the minds of many golfers, a brand’s identity often remains frozen at the moment of first impression. This is particularly true for PXG, a company whose bold entrance into the golf equipment scene in 2015 created perceptions both good and bad that continue to shape how golfers view the brand today.

Bob Parsons once told me that to be successful, brands need to change and evolve. PXG has certainly evolved but have golfers’ perceptions kept pace? Let’s examine some of the most common myths surrounding PXG and see which hold true, which were once true but no longer apply, and which were never accurate to begin with.

PXG is too expensive

“Nobody makes golf clubs the way we do. PERIOD.”

When PXG launched with this bold tagline and equally bold pricing, it positioned itself as the ultra-premium option in golf. And, truthfully, they were expensive. We’re talking $850 for a driver that many found too spinny, $550 for hybrids and irons at $650 a stick.

Today, though? While their Sugar Daddy wedges remain premium-priced (justifiably so, as they’re fully milled from a single block of steel), most of their lineup has become far more accessible, with forged offerings that won’t require a second mortgage.

Does Anyone Else Wish Golf Returned To Pre-Covid Times?

I’ll sound like an arrogant jerk in this article. And, well, the haters have a valid point there.

Regardless, I will press forward with my argument:

I miss pre-pandemic golf.

Before you start launching 9-irons through my apartment window, let me concede that this is a nuanced discussion.

Of course I am thrilled the golf industry has, on the whole, been surging the past few years. MyGolfSpy benefits from that increased interest. Courses, driving ranges, club manufacturers and many others are on the list of beneficiaries.

The New Ben Hogan PTx Metal Woods: 10K And A Dash of Adams

I spent a good 45 minutes looking over the new Ben Hogan PTx metal woods when they arrived last week. Something was up, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

It finally came to me. With the good folks of Plano, Texas, as my witness, the new Hogans look eerily similar to offerings from Adams Golf before TaylorMade bought them out.

Before you start bleating “copy!” at me, remember the MyGolfSpy Thinking Reader’s Credo: Looks like isn’t same as.

No, this is not just recycled 15-year-old technology in a new package. Be curious, my friends. There’s much to learn here.

Spoiler alert: Be prepared for another entry in the 10K sweepstakes.

Three Golf Training Aids You Haven’t Tried But Should

I have a love-hate relationship with golf training aids. Some are genuinely helpful but plenty take up space, cost too much and don’t actually improve your game. The three training aids I’m highlighting here aren’t necessarily the biggest names or the flashiest products. I’m not even saying they are the best golf training aids on the market. But they certainly deserve more attention than they receive. Each one offers real value for golfers who want to practice with a purpose. If you haven’t tried these yet, I would.

Divot Board

I first spoke with the owner of Divot Board just a few months after it launched (early 2020). He sent one to my house and everyone loved it right away.

The brilliance of the Divot Board lies in its ability to easily teach the concept of impact. Even beginners instantly “get it” when they see the contact pattern. It’s very simple. Put the ball on the board and then analyze your divot pattern.

The Divot Board comes with a carabiner, allowing you to clip it onto your golf bag. However, I preferred using it at home for practice and then I’d go to the range without the Divot Board to see how much more consistent my ball striking had become.

For full disclosure, our Divot Board wore out over time but it got a ton of use from me, friends and family. They now offer replacement pads so you don’t have to replace the whole thing when the hitting pad wears out.

Bryson’s Advice To Play The Forward Tees: Genius Or Gimmick? We Found Out

Bryson DeChambeau has been encouraging golfers to move up to the forward tees and see how low they can go. With a game like his, it’s clear the strategy has helped him learn how to pile up the birdies. I’ve been wanting to try this strategy and I recently had the chance. Here’s what I learned.

A little background

I’m a scratch golfer and normally play from about 6,100 to 6,300 yards. I hit a 7-iron 155 yards and drive the ball close to 250.

When I tested Bryson’s theory, I moved up to the most forward set of tees at the golf course which are right at 4,000 yards.

I had my kids with me. My eight-year-old daughter normally plays from these tees and my 11-year-old son moved up a set from his normal 4,500-yard tees to join us.

How it went

For starters, we had a lot of fun. The kids loved having me play from their tee box and we got to discuss strategy, course difficulty and other aspects of the game.

6 Budget-Friendly Storage Solutions For Your Golf Gear

Finding the right storage for your golf clubs can be a tricky task. Sure, you could leave them in your garage year-round but what if you live in a climate with extreme temperature conditions? In Wisconsin, temps in my garage can get to sub-freezing in the winter in a hurry so I’d prefer to have a climate-controlled area to store them. Closet space may not be easy to find or you may be like me and want to showcase your bag when not in use (or longingly stare at it when winter hits).

The six storage options below provide great value and convenience if you’re looking for a new way to keep your clubs while not in use. Check them out!

Maxfli golf storage organizer

This bag storage option from Maxfli is simple yet effective. Two open elevated areas sit on both ends to store yours and your significant other’s bag (or two of yours, yeah, I’m talking to you). Shelving in the center of the unit is perfect for shoes, golf balls, towels and whatever other accessories you need space for.

IZZO golf garage organizer

Another simple and sleek storage option is the IZZO golf garage organizer. The elevated platform keeps your clubs off the garage floor and out of harm’s way for those wet, rainy days when the floor gets soaked from your vehicles. Shelves as well as easy clip hangers to dry your towels and gloves are included with this storage option.

ClubsDock wall mounted golf storage

If you’re looking for a storage option to help show off your bag between rounds, look no further than the ClubsDock wall mount. This simple design turns your golf gear into a showpiece for your office or den when not on the course. It is made from high-quality steel, uses rubber-coated hooks to keep your gear protected and has a sliding system to accommodate all golf bag sizes.
