Sure, Rory McIlroy has good days, but he's had too many like had Thursday at the Players. More frustrating, at the moment he can't seem to figure out how to solve the problem.

The Science of Plumb-Bobbing with your Putter
You may have seen Justin Rose or other professional golfers try to read the break of a putt by using their putter as a Plumb-Bob (PB). Standing behind your ball and using your putter to determine the break of a putt is USELESS. PB only helps you understand the break of the green UNDER YOUR FEET. Since your ball breaks the most as it slows down near the hole, you should only use PB FROM THE HOLE SIDE of the ball’s path to the hole. You rarely see this done correctly by the pros on TV.
When to Plumb-Bob
1/ Don’t waste your time plumb-bobbing when you can see an obvious break on the path from your ball to the hole. You still have to estimate the amount of break for your putt.
2/ If you can see 2 or 3 breaks on the path for your ball (DON’T PLUMB-BOB) just make your best guess where your ball will break to reach the hole and prey for a 2 putt green.
3/ Ideally you should plumb-bob if you can’t see the break on a smooth green for up to a 10 foot putt. Slight breaks on a downhill putt are the most difficult to read and should be read by using PB.
CALIBRATE YOUR PUTTER BEFORE you ever Try to Plumb-Bob
Every putter head has a different weight so it may change the angle of the shaft as it hangs down from your hand. In any building, close one eye (remember to always use the same open eye for PB) and hold your putter with an outstretched arm as you line up a specific side of your shaft facing the frame of a door (not including the grip). Change the orientation of your putter head until one side of the shaft lines up perfectly with the frame of a door and remember that exact orientation.
Always use the SAME open eye, SAME side of the shaft and SAME direction of your club face FOR ALL OF YOUR PLUMB-BOBBING. [I use my right eye to line-up the left side of my putter shaft while using my right hand to hold the putter with the putter face pointing directly at the hole.]
Plumb-Bobbing on the Green
1/ Stand below the hole (but fairly close to the hole) and ONLY use your PB eye (close the other one) to first line up the center of the hole with the center of your ball.
2/ Then hold your putter in front of that eye with the correct putter face orientation (as it was calibrated) and line up the BOTTOM of the correct side of your putter shaft with the center of the hole.
3/ The UPPER end of your putter shaft will only line up with the center of your ball if there is no break at the hole. If the correct side of your shaft lines up on one side of your ball (the left of right side), that side is the HIGH side of the green so your ball will break from that side down to the hole as it nears the hole. You can only practice putting to understand how much break to expect.

First Look: Arccos Caddie Team Program
Secretariat bolts out of the starting gate!
OK, maybe not the ideal analogy.
But in the race for golf data capture and analytics supremacy, Arccos Caddie Team Program is putting more distance between it and the competition.
Targeted at high school, junior, collegiate and national team programs, it’s figuratively bursting out of the gate.
Golf programs at the University of Southern California, University of Alabama, Oklahoma State, Florida A&M and, most recently, Howard University are working with the technology.

Ben Hogan BHM02 Putter: Forged Fangs
Ben Hogan BHM02 Putter Key Takeaways:
Hogan adds a fifth putter to its lineup.BHM02 high MOI fang-toothed style head with forged 1020 carbon steel face.Hogan is also adding a Platinum Nickel finish option on the rest of its putter line.Priced at $195, available now on the Ben Hogan website. In one sense, the new Ben Hogan BHM02 putter is just another addition to the Hogan stable of golf clubs.
In another, it represents the final nail in the coffin of all the “will Hogan make it?” narrative. Yeah, yeah, it’s another fang-toothed copy of a copy of someone else’s copy. But consider what this resilient little company had done over the past 15 months.
Hogan started 2020 by partnering with nationwide fitter Club Champion. Hogan then launched three new iron sets, new utilities, new hybrids and a second driver in rapid-fire succession. New bags, accessories and a full-service European operation quickly followed. Yep, we can retire the “will Hogan make it” question once and for all.
Ben Hogan BHM02 Putter
The BHM02 is Hogan’s take on the fang-tooth head originally made popular by Odyssey. Groundbreaking? No, but if you sell putters, the fang-tooth is up there with the Anser and the Spider as de rigueur.
The Ben Hogan BHM02 fang-tooth does feature a distinctly Hogan twist, however. Hogan calls its putter line Precision Milled Forged. Like Mizuno’s M-Craft line, the 1025 carbon steel head is forged and then face milled to its final shape.

PXG 0311 GEN4 Irons: The XCOR Factor
PXG 0311 GEN4 Irons – Key Takeways
PXG announces the fourth generation of its signature 0311 irons.Options include the 0311 T (for Tour), 0311 P (for Player) and 0311 XP (for Xtreme Performance).Big changes include an updated weighting system and new XCOR polymer material.Pricing is $349 per club. Presale starts March 9, ready to ship in early April. The new PXG 0311 GEN4 irons are, literally, a case of less being more.
Not something one would normally associate with PXG, is it?
So, what’s “less” on the PXG 0311 GEN4 irons? First of all, GEN4 represents less time between 0311 iterations than ever before. You’ll also notice there are also 44 percent fewer of PXG’s signature mini-weight screws in each iron.
And maybe the biggest less of all is the price tag. To be fair, we’re not talking TJ Maxx-level discounts here but 18-percent lower pricing than GEN3 definitely counts as less.
All of that less, according to PXG, equals more. More what? Let’s find out.

PXG 0341 X GEN4 Fairways and 0317 X GEN4 Hybrids
Included in PXG’s GEN4 deployment are the 0341 X fairways and 0317 X hybrids.
As with the GEN4 driver collection, the pricing indicates where PXG wants to position its marquee line. Apparently, that range is a step below previous PXG offerings but a notch above other mainline brands.
PXG rarely does anything quietly. But one could argue that its fairway woods and hybrids have remained somewhat on the periphery of equipment discussions.
Part of that is likely because the success of a manufacturer’s metalwood line begins (and sometimes ends) with the driver. It might be the star of the show but it never hurts to have a solid supporting cast.

PXG 0811 GEN4 X, XF and XT Drivers
PXG has introduced its GEN4 driver lineup. The three models range from ultra-forgiving to specialized for high swing speed players.Retail price is $549.
The days of discounting the flagship lineup are over … at least for now. PXG’s new 0811 GEN4 drivers aren’t as spendy as their prior premium driver offerings but their release suggests they have designs on going toe-to-toe with the industry leaders on performance and price.
Toss in the 15 new player signings announced last week (the list includes Sung Kang, Danny Lee and Hudson Swafford) and every indication is that PXG is once again serious about becoming a significant player in the golf world.
Welcome back.
PXG 0811 GEN4 Driver Lineup
As has become the custom, the 0811 GEN4 driver lineup includes three models. The X and XF models occupy the same roles in the lineup as their GEN2 equivalents. The XT is an entirely new model. It’s reasonably distinct in the market and should garner some attention within its admittedly narrow target demographic.
