FootJoy Triples Down on BOA with New Tour Alpha Carbon

BOA fans, rejoice. FootJoy just figured out how to fit not one or two, but three BOA dials onto the new Tour Alpha Carbon.

But that isn’t the only innovation going on here. The new Tour Alpha Caron Triple BOA also features Carbitex OmniFlex, a new innovation in carbon fiber textiles. This flexible carbon fiber is integrated directly into the BOA fit straps to ensure maximum stability and added power transfer.

Tech Specs

Triple BOACarbitex OmniFlex StratoFoam Cushion159-point traction$299

Why BOA?

The real question, is why have three BOA dials? The answer here is fit. Having one BOA dial is nice, sure, but three in different sections of the shoe allow the wearer to customize the fit to their foot. Need more heel lockdown? Tighten the BOA on the back. Worried more about the lateral instep? Use the dial there to dial in your fit.

Where one BOA can be effective in creating a stable fit, three amplify and accentuate the BOA’s unique ability to lock you in and help you become one with your golf shoe.

Why Carbon?

Typically, we see carbon fiber used in shank plates (or torsional support plates) in golf shoes. In running shoes or training shoes like the PAYNTR X 001 Trainer, its purpose is to provide energy return and that spring-like effect runners are looking for.

How Golf Has Changed Since Anthony Kim Left

Prior to his comeback earlier this month, Anthony Kim hadn’t played professional golf since May 2012.

A dozen years is a lengthy stretch of time regardless of context, but this particular dozen-year stretch felt even longer from a golf context.

We were reminded of that when it came to light that Kim only recently learned how to use a TrackMan, launch monitors that have been ubiquitous in the pro game (and beyond) for many years now.

It got us thinking about all the ways golf has changed since 2012—because there have been some dramatic shifts in all areas of the game since that time.

There is no way to capture every part of the evolution, so feel free to add your own thoughts in the comments.

Golf Shoe 101: Intro to Golf Shoes

How often do you think about golf shoes? I’m willing to be that the answer is “not enough.”

Look, I’m not suggesting you should obsess over golf shoes like I do. But you should put more thought into your choice in golf footwear.

Let me explain.

Golf shoes are more important than you know. They are, of course, one of the few pieces of equipment you use on every shot. Every shot, every hill, every putt can be made easier or harder due to your golf shoes.

Picking up what I’m putting down? Golf shoes are important. Understanding the nuances of golf shoes (and product architecture) will improve your game. Welcome to Golf Shoe 101. In this piece, we’ll walk through the different types of golf shoes and give you some tips on where to buy them.

Golf Training Aids vs. Golf Lessons

Golf training aids offer instant feedback and a way to work on your golf swing without the help of a professional. Is that the best solution? As a golf professional, I can tell you that the best combination is a mix of golf training aids and the right teaching professional. I’ll show you which golfers do better with training aids vs. golf lessons.

What’s Better Golf Training Aids vs. Golf Lessons?

Golf lessons offer one-on-one attention with a professional who can help take strokes off of your golf game. However, the real benefit of golf lessons goes deeper than this.

If you get a great golf teacher, they also become a coach.

They care about your game, want you to succeed, and are excited for you when the scores start to drop.

Golf training aids fill in the gaps.

Predicting This Year’s Major Champions

It’s that time of year again.

With only two weeks left before the Masters starts, major championship season is nearly upon us.

Sluggish TV ratings in 2024 have told a story that fans are tired of pro golf’s division. The continued fracturing has made the majors more valuable as players on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf only come together four times a year.

As it did last year, that divide has created a sense of mystery heading into the four most important events. We have a lot of context on the PGA Tour side, but not as much for LIV.

We know the best golfer in the world is Scottie Scheffler—the only real debate to be had is how dominant he can be during a run of historically strong ballstriking

Major(s) News & Notes, March 28th, 2024

The only course that will remain difficult under all conditions will be one that is designed and kept for golf of a stereotyped, monotonous character, and this makes a most uninteresting proposition.

Swing in a Circle to Make a Straight Golf Shot?

It really sounds like an impossible task to swing in an arc to hit a ball straight at a target. Of course, that’s what you are trying to do with every golf swing. It’s the real reason why we have so many problems trying to hit our ball at a target.

The Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, used VISUALIZATION to hit his targets. He was making an imprint of his visualized shot on his brain. That memory controlled his swing direction and club face direction to create amazing shots. I suspect that it takes years of practice to achieve his skill level.

Understand the Science of Your Golf Swing
Your driver is your longest club, so the longer swing radius generates the most club head speed and distance but swing direction and face direction can generate the worst results. You need to understand what causes both of these “direction problems”.

I found this image created by HackMotion to illustrate the impact of swing direction and club face direction.

Problems for Direction Control:
1/ Your left and right arm extend from the left and right sides of your shoulders. Your shoulders should initiate the start of your downswing and your leading shoulder ends up further from your ball at the point of impact than your trailing shoulder.
2/ At setup, your leading wrist is slightly bowed but at the point of impact you want you leading wrist to be flat (for drives) or slightly cupped (for irons).

Cause of Direction Control:
Hank Haney reminds us that we need to minimize angles to control the swing direction and club face direction. Unfortunately, your shoulders and wrists need to adjust during your swing to bring your club face to square at the point of impact.

Why You Should Consider Cold Plunging

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried:

Cold Plunging. This trendy fitness hack promises a lot of health benefits.

You’ve likely noticed cold plunging has become all the rage in the health and fitness world and golfers are no exception. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods, among others, have taken, well, the plunge.

Who Tried It:

Hayes Weidman. A MyGolfSpy Forum leader, staff writer, golf and fitness fanatic who would do just about anything (like immerse himself in ice-cold water on a daily basis) if it means another yard gained on the course.

Let’s get this out of the way now: This is NOT an article that quotes academic studies or lays out a compelling scientific argument for why you should cold plunge. This is an article about one guy’s experience in buying and using an at-home ice bath. You’re going to need to fire up Google, do your homework and make your own decision. The sports medicine world isn’t exactly in full agreement on cold therapies.

Wilson Infinite Putters: Updated for 2024

The new line of Wilson Infinite putters isn’t dramatically different from the old line of Wilson Infinite putters.

And that, my faithful readers, isn’t a bad thing at all.

When Wilson introduced its Infinite putter line in 2015, the golf world responded with a collective yawn. But starting with the 2018 upgrades, Wilson Infinite putters have ranged from solid to, at times, outstanding performers in our Most Wanted testing. Add to that the fact they rarely topped $100 and, well, you had a winner all around.

The new lineup isn’t messing with a good thing. They’re still named after Chicago landmarks and neighborhoods and they still represent one hell of a value.

Wilson Infinite Putters: To Infinity and Beyond

We can’t talk much about the new Wilson Infinite putters without discussing from whence they came. The original Wilson Infinites came in a steel-gray finish and an industrial, if not utilitarian, look with a kitchen sink’s worth of alignment lines on top. That’s a polite way of saying they weren’t what you’d call pretty.
