Do you ever hit a drive off the first tee and instantly know it will be a good day on the course? The secret? It could be your tempo. When your tempo is on, the game is just easier. The next time your tempo feels off, try one of my favorite golf tempo drills before frustration sets in. These drills will help you remember what easy golf feels like. 

What Is Tempo?

Tempo refers to the pace of your swing. The easiest way to think about “tempo” is to think of it as the “rhythm” of your swing. Although there is no perfect formula for good golf tempo, many great players have a 3:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio. 

What does that mean? Take three counts (1, 2, 3) to swing the club back and one to swing down and through. Players with great tempo keep it consistent regardless of the shot being played or the club in their hand.

Having said that, tempo can change slightly in the short game and many golfers find a 2:1 ratio effective for shorter shots. 

4 Golf Tempo Drills To Get Your Tempo Back 

I’ll give you four of my favorite golf tempo drills. I suggest trying each of these but, ideally, find one that becomes your go-to drill when things are not going your way. 

The bedrock foundation of each and every golf swing begins with the proper stance. It impacts your accuracy, power and overall performance on the course. In this short tutorial, we’ll delve into the key elements of a proper golf stance.

Understanding the Basics:

Let’s start by understanding the basic principles that contribute to a balanced and effective setup. Start by positioning your feet shoulder-width apart, creating stability and a solid base. Your weight should be evenly distributed between both feet, with a slight flex in the knees to promote flexibility and maintain balance throughout your swing. Weight distribution will change throughout the swing but staying on the balls of your feet helps maintain balance.

Alignment is equally crucial. Ensure your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are parallel to the target line. This promotes a straighter shot trajectory and minimizes the chances of slicing or hooking the ball. When practicing your stance, an alignment stick can aid in determining if you are aimed properly at the target. In relation to the golf ball position, the alignment stick should be between your feet and the ball, to provide a reference point to the target. A second alignment stick can be used perpendicular to the target. This will provide a reference point for the middle of your stance and placement of the front foot, in relation to the golf ball.

The Grip Matters

Let’s briefly touch on the importance of a proper grip. A sound grip complements your stance, forming the cornerstone of a cohesive swing. Ensure a neutral grip, with the V-shape between your thumb and forefinger of your lead hand pointing towards your trailing shoulder. This neutral grip promotes a square clubface at impact, enhancing your ability to control the ball’s direction.

The Proper Width and Flex

Achieving the ideal width and flex in your stance is pivotal. Your feet should be positioned just beyond shoulder-width apart, creating a solid base for your swing. Experiment with your stance width to find what feels most comfortable and provides optimal balance.
