Golf Pride Reintroduces V55 Grip

What’s old is new again.

Nearly 20 years ago, Golf Pride introduced the V55 grip. Sadly, the popular grip, a hybrid between the Tour Velvet and Victory styles, was discontinued in the early 2010s.

Today, Golf Pride announced the return of the V55 including the iconic “Grip Rite Swing Rite” pattern featured on the original design. The (new) V55 grip is here for a good time, not a long time. Here’s what you need to know about this nostalgic golf grip before it’s gone (again).

Release Details

Available now at Golf Pride Cord ($12.99) and non-corded ($11.99)Responsive feel with “Grip Rite Swing Rite” guides for consistent hand placementNorth America onlyStandard size (no mid/oversize available)

Destined to Sell?

Why bring back a 20-year-old golf grip? I wish I knew.

I was just a wee lad when Golf Pride first introduced the V55 Grip as a way to celebrate the brand’s (then) 55th anniversary. As such, I’ve never seen nor felt the original V55.

Tiger Woods ’13 Golf Shoe Review

There’s a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried:

NIKE Tiger Woods ‘13 golf shoes. It’s been 10 years since the TW ‘13 first graced the golf course. Now, NIKE has brought back the fan-favorite spiked golf shoe in a ploy to drum up nostalgia.

Who Tried It:

Connor. Director of Soft Goods Testing and resident sneakerhead. I believe golf is better with a pair of cool shoes and comfortable joggers. I hadn’t yet touched a golf club in 2013 when the original NIKE TW ‘13 dropped. However, I was around for the NIKE Free craze (the tech that the TW ‘13 is predicated on) and am excited to see whether it can withstand the test of time.

How does a 10-year-old golf shoe hold up in 2023? Have golf shoes evolved that much in a decade’s time? I’m here to give you the down and dirty about what NIKE has dubbed the most popular Tiger Woods golf shoe of all time.

What’s Old is New

Why would NIKE bring back a shoe that’s 10 years old? The simple answer is “money.” While I’m no economist, it’s clear NIKE has been putting less stock into their golf footwear department. After all, it’s hard to compete with the big boys like FootJoy who only produce golf shoes.

VEGA Reaches for the Stars with Mizar Irons

According to astronomers, VEGA is the most important star in the sky. Could VEGA Mizar Irons be the most crucial ones in your golf bag? It’s definitely possible.

VEGA started out as the house brand for the famous Kyoei forging house, which has been forging clubs in Japan for over 60 years. When the team at PGE got involved a sense of style was added to what were already exceptional one-piece forgings.

VEGA’s owners PGE have a holistic approach to creating the best clubs possible with a Japanese heritage. As well as VEGA, they distribute Shimada shafts, one of only two steel shaft manufacturers to manufacture their product  in Japan, and IOMIC grips, the colorful elastomer alternative to traditional rubber grips.

Uniquely VEGA are the only brand that has SST PURE’d staffs graphite shafts as a stock option. Vega strongly believes it helps eliminate inconsistencies in the shaft.

One-Piece Challenges

The headache for VEGA was that one-piece forgings don’t win launch monitor battles. They still feel incredible, and there will always be golfers who will forgo technology for feel. VEGA split their line-ups into two distinct camps.

Jack and Tiger Agree on the Most Important Swing Factor

Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods agree that the most important component for your golf swing is “speed” (club head speed). They both agree that you need to learn swing speed first and accuracy will come later. Without speed you can’t generate more distance. Without long driver distance you will never reach anywhere near the 300 yards that you want, to get closer to the green, for easier short approach shots.

Control Is the Second Most Important Component
Jack and Tiger felt that direction control was less important than distance. All golfers can eventually learn to make setup adjustment to control their draw or fade to improve their percentage of fairways hit in regulation. Tiger was not worried about missing fairways with his longer driver distance. His skill to hit more Greens in Regulation proved that he could recover from difficult locations and still land his ball in great putting locations.

Tiger generates most of his power in the bottom quarter of his swing. That’s where you need to generate swing speed.

Overall Tiger’s had a worse percentage of hitting Fairways In Regulation than his Greens In Regulation. That means that his ability to recover or scramble from off the fairway was the best part of his game. This make sense when you see his backyard. He has 3, par-3 holes and can practice whenever he had spare time. Way to go Tiger!

I have never been a big fan of swinging faster but I do realize that a faster club head speed is the only way to gain distance. I’m getting back on the bandwagon, but I will definitely focus on hitting more fairways with a stronger release. Of course I still practice with GOLFSTR+ to keep my leading arm straight in the backswing. Setting up with my leading elbow pointing up my target line AND KEEPING MY LEADING ARM STRAIGHT are both real success factors for my improved game. My goal is to shoot every round in the 80’s or better. Buy one today at www.GOLFSTR.com

Innovation Unveiled: MyStrategy from Shot Scope

MyStrategy from Shot Scope may prove to be one of the most useful innovations in the shot/data tracking game since its inception.

Yeah, we just wrote that.

Shot Scope is unveiling the MyStrategy function today with relatively little fanfare. But if it does what we think it does, you may be able to practically apply all your shot data to actually playing the game. Based on what we’ve seen so far – granted, we’ve only scratched the surface – competitive golfers and golf trip junkies will be able to strategically plan their next rounds.

MyStrategy from Shot Scope: The Basics

MyStrategy is a new function on the Shot Scope dashboard on your computer and on your phone. It uses all your distance and dispersion shot data to help you decide how you’d like to play any hole on any mapped course.

In other words, it allows you to build a game plan based on history, not hope.

These Staff Favorite Hats Are 30% Off

That old hat of yours is looking a little sad, isn’t it? Don’t worry, I’ll hook you up with a new one.

All I want is for you to feel cool and confident. Whether your hairline is looking more sparce than an outdoor driving range in Winter or you need a hat that can withstand life’s greatest adventure, the solution is the same: buy a Melin.

The best part? Select styles are 30% off for the Holidays. I told you I’d hook you up!

I know what you’re thinking: Melin Hats are expensive. And, you’re not wrong. It’s rare that a hat cost more than $30 or so. And no, Melin hats are not (sadly) magic. It won’t cure your slice or make you a better golfer. Honestly, if you’d rather pull out that crusty old curved bill than spend money on a new hat, this sale isn’t for you.

On the flipside, if you’re very particular about your hats and are a fan of great quality, there’s never been a better (or more budget-friendly) time to splurge on a Melin hat. They rarely run sales, and the style selection is fairly robust.
