Vokey SM8 Slate Blue Wedges are coming to retail next month. They offer the same tech as the current SM8 wedge with a new finish option.

That’s basically the whole story and, if it sounds familiar, that’s because … swap an 8 for a 7 …  I wrote this story two years ago.

It was a cool refresh then and it’s just as cool now because Slate Blue is Vokey’s best finish. That’s entirely an opinion and I should be clear that there’s no actual science behind it. The Vokey guys would tell you that performance from Slate Blue wedges is the same as any other finish in the Vokey catalog.

Vokey says the application of its Slate Blue finish is similar to PVD but that it’s more time-intensive. As you’d expect, there’s a trade-off for that. Slate Blue wedges cost more but the finish is more durable than PVD so they’ll look better longer.

Another interesting feature is the (FIXED) Tungsten screw on the sole to help with swing weight balance and the overall weight of the iron head.  The base set is sold 5-PW with an optional #4 and gap wedge.

USGA and RandA Modernize Amateur Status Rules

The USGA and The R&A have announced proposals for significant changes to the Rules of Amateur Status that govern the game worldwide.

These proposals result from a modernization initiative that has identified a clear need to bring the Rules up to date to reflect today’s global amateur game and ensure that the Rules are easier to understand and apply.

The proposed Rules, along with explanations to key changes, have been posted on usga.org and randa.org and the organizations are now inviting feedback from golfers and stakeholders. Comments will be accepted through Friday, March 26, with the new Rules scheduled to be adopted on January 1, 2022.

A comprehensive review of the Rules of Amateur Status began in late 2017, focusing on three main goals: to ensure the Rules are in the best interests of the game, reflect the modern game, and are easily understood and applied.

John Shippen: A Golfing Pioneer

The following story was written by Robert Sommers and appeared in the August 1968 edition of Golf Journal.

In the history of the United States Open, a single hole has changed the course of the championship with dramatic consequence many times. For instance, there was Sam Snead’s 8 on the 72nd hole at the Philadelphia Country Club in 1939; Dick Mayer’s 7 on the 72nd hole at Baltusrol in 1954; Ben Hogan’s 5 on the 71st hole at Oak Hill in 1956, and John Shippen’s 11 on the 31st hole at Shinnecock Hills in 1896.

Those disastrous scores of Snead, Mayer and Hogan have been well documented, but not that of Shippen.

John Shippen died recently in Newark, N.J., at the age of 90. Before his death he told an interviewer   that he believed himself to be the first American-born professional. He was the son of a black father and a full-blooded Shinnecock Indian mother.

Bridgestone is kicking its golf ball production into overdrive this month. The company says it has boosted production capacity at its Covington, Ga., ball plant by 30 percent as of Feb. 1.

That tally, by the way, is a 30-percent increase over 2019 levels, not 2020 COVID-related adjusted capacity levels.

“Through January, we had been running three shifts five days a week,” says Bridgestone Golf CEO Dan Murphy. “Starting in February, we added two 12-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays so we’re running 24/7 now.”

Murphy, who returned to Bridgestone Golf as CEO nearly three years ago, says the additional weekend shifts are intended to be permanent, as the company has hired new workers to handle the extra load.

Padraig Harrington shot a 75 with six bogeys and two birdies at the Genesis Invitational on Thursday. Harrington spent the previous 10 days in quarantine after testing positive for the coronavirus.
